Running!

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up;
    it knows that it has to run faster than the fastest lion,
    or die!
Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up;
    it knows that it has to run faster than the slowest gazelle,
    or starve to death!
It doesn't matter if you're a lion or a gazelle;
    when the sun rises, you better start running!

“It doesn't matter if you're a lion or a gazelle;

  when the sun rises, you better start running!”

This reminds me of the hectic pace that we’ve set for ourselves.  The problem is that when you start running, you tend to miss the most important things in your life while trying to keep up with the race.  Is this ambition?  Or, is it going through the motions of life without savoring and LIVING life?  Of course, it’s easy to say this, but for me, this topic has meaning to me.  Perhaps because I’ve “ran” for a period, or perhaps it is because I am a mother.  I tried to “run”, get a better job.  I’ve worked 70 hours a week. I ran so much that two years went by and suddenly my little boy is a man and I pause and think, ”Where did the time go?  Then and only then, running as fast as I could, I realized that in doing so, I missed out; missed out on some of the most important moments of my life, moments that could have been spent with my son.  Life is short and it is not until you lose someone that is close to you that you look back and think, “I wish I had more time….I wish I’d slowed down”.   Recently I lost someone that I really cared about.  She died and I mourn her greatly.  She is a poignant reminder that you should cherish what time you have instead of running as fast as you can to get by another day.  I don’t know about you….but I’ve slowed down and I don’t plan to miss another moment with my son or living my life each day because I’ve been running so fast at work or in other aspects of my life.  I plan to notice all the little things we overlook; .the smell of a fresh rainfall, newly cut grass, the crunch of a leaf or the sound of water. Isn’t it better to savor and cherish life than to rush through it actually MISSING it???
